Elon Musk’s political action committee is pouring more money into House and Senate contests as the multibillionaire tries to help Republicans preserve their majorities in both chambers. The spending surge comes while Tesla, which Musk owns and leads, faces disturbing racism allegations in a California case.

Recent filings made with the Federal Elections Commission show that America PAC has spent at least $19.7 million. The growing political investment is aimed at helping Republican candidates maintain control of Congress.

The largest share of that money has gone into the Texas Senate race. President Donald Trump’s handpicked candidate, Ken Paxton, has been slipping behind Democrat James Talarico, making the contest a major target for Musk’s cash machine.

America PAC is also spending heavily on Senate races in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Maine, New Hampshire, and Alaska. Its involvement stretches further down the ballot, with investments in 30 House races.

The money arrives after Musk’s companies avoided federal scrutiny under the current Republican majority, according to the source. That lack of scrutiny has extended across Congress and the executive branch under Trump.

A Democratic majority could bring that arrangement to an end. One possible focus would be the current California case involving Tesla and allegations that the company tolerated and even encouraged racism against Black employees at its factory in Fremont, California.

At the trial, Tesla’s lawyers have argued that employees and managers were within their rights to use the racial slur cited in the case. Their argument rests on the claim that some people within the Black community have used the word as a term of “respect and endearment.”

That courtroom defense ignores the vast difference between attempts by members of the Black community to reclaim a slur and its use by employees in an allegedly hostile workplace. The distinction is central to the ugly allegations surrounding the factory.

Hundreds of worker complaints were filed against Tesla. They alleged that the company allowed supervisors to use the racial slur, refer to Black employees as “slaves,” tolerate racist graffiti and swastikas in common areas, and describe the factory as a “plantation.”

A state examination of the Fremont facility also found disparities affecting Black employees. It determined that Black workers were paid less and directed into jobs that paid less than those held by their white counterparts.

The allegations against Tesla sit alongside Musk’s own public conduct. He has used his enormous profile to promote several racist conspiracy theories, memes, and beliefs, according to the source.

Musk has also attacked the casting of Black and transgender actors in movies based on mythology. His political spending now makes him a significant financial force behind Republican attempts to retain power in both the House and Senate.

Some Republicans have privately expressed concern that being associated with Musk could damage candidates. Their worry centers on candidates trying to appeal to an electorate that has become increasingly sour on politics associated with Trump.

Those concerns have not caused the party to reject Musk’s considerable financial assistance. Whatever Republicans may say privately, America PAC continues placing millions of dollars behind their candidates across a widening collection of congressional contests.

The result is a stark pairing of Musk’s political and corporate interests. As his PAC works to preserve Republican majorities that have not subjected his companies to federal scrutiny, Tesla’s lawyers are defending conduct at a factory where Black workers reported sweeping racist abuse.
