Donald Trump: December 10th
“It’s like taking money and throwing it out the window, and Mitch McConnell could have stopped it. What he’s done is unthinkable. He gave up the debt ceiling. That was the best negotiating tool that we had [to] stop this horrible bill.
McConnell is “so bad, for our party, and he is so bad for the country. It’s just incredible what he did. And he did it without the support of the Senate.”
Donald Trump doesn’t like Mitch McConnell (not right now) because Mitch McConnell doesn’t need Donald Trump. As we have reported on many occasions, Trump likes to brag that he seeks “loyalty” in someone far more than competence, intelligence, work ethic. Mitch McConnell doesn’t owe Trump any loyalty at all.
In fact, at least with respect to 2022, Trump could be standing in the way of what McConnell really does need, viscerally, to be majority leader.
But Trump needs McConnell far more than Trump seems to know (though it might now be dawning on him.) IF Trump and the GOP needed a Republican politician to run interference of some kind regarding a possible criminal referral from the Select Committee to DOJ, Trump would need the master of the dark arts. Mitch McConnell.
Trouble for Trump. McConnell seems “interested” in what the Select Committee is finding and is not being particularly partisan about it. From MSN:
Shortly before members of Congress left Capitol Hill for their holiday break, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was asked what he hoped to learn from the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack. I assumed he’d dismiss the bipartisan panel and its relevance.
But he didn’t. “I read the reports every day,” the Kentucky Republican told reporters, “and it’ll be interesting to see what [investigators] conclude.”
That would have been the spot where a MAGA would have said that the conclusions were meaningless because they’re entirely political. Mitch McConnell said the opposite. The conclusions and findings are meaningful and thus has taken the politics out of it, leaving Trump out to dry.
As NBC News noted, McConnell went a little further later in the week.Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday that he looks forward to seeing what the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol finds in its probe. “It was a horrendous event and I think what they are seeking to find out is something the public needs to know,” McConnell said in an interview with Spectrum News.
The public needs to know.
Donald Trump has spent his entire life hiding. Indeed, Mitch McConnell personally helped Trump keep his secrets while in the White House. It now appears that McConnell feels… free, to want to know the truth himself and isn’t willing to run interference for Trump.
It probably wouldn’t have made a difference but perhaps Trump should’ve kept his fat mouth shut about the debt ceiling deal. In fact, perhaps Trump might want to think about how he could make McConnell’s life easier nowadays… Right. That’s not going to happen.
And that makes McConnell’s tone and approach highly interesting and perhaps, even more, highly important.
