For almost a year now, a House committee has been gathering details about everything that led up to the January 6th Capitol riots, as well as what actually happened that day. Roger Stone, one republican who refused to cooperate with the committee and chose to plead the fifth for every question they asked him, has decided to give his answers instead to the “Telegram”, which is a website that far-right republicans use to send messages.
Stone puts the blame almost completely on Steve Bannon, who he said, “really gave the order to breach the capital [sic] and maneuvered patriots into dangerous positions.” This accusation does not come as a huge surprise, as Bannon and Stone have never been known for being especially friendly despite being in the same party and generally running in the same social circles.
Stone has been especially active lately in far-right extremist media, and has had his opinion on the riots as well as the committee investigating them heard. His reaction comes in contrast to many other republicans, specifically many former Trump staffers, who have worked cooperatively with the committee. Despite not working with those investigating the trials, he is still revealing valuable information about that day, although his personal biases and motivations for blaming Bannon may make his claims questionable at best.
When speaking about Bannon in his Telegram message, Stone said he “was willing to try crazy things like this to curry favor with Trump who had a [sic] no interest in Bannon’s bullsh*t.” His insults to Bannon are most likely sparked by Bannon’s initial reaction to the Capitol Insurrection because just weeks after it occurred he gave information on several other republicans in return for a pardon for himself.
