President Donald Trump admitted months ago that his pool contractor botched repairs to the Reflecting Pool. Yet Trump continues blaming antifa vandals for damage to his cherished pool liner, and his administration is now ordering at least $343,100 in surveillance cameras to deter vandals whose existence the article disputes.
It is an extraordinary use of government money to sustain Trump’s fixation on a repair project that already went wrong. Instead of accepting the explanation he previously acknowledged, Trump is responding with cameras, threats of prison and more unsupported claims about activists damaging the site.
According to The Washington Post, the U.S. Park Police leased mobile cameras from LiveView Technologies. The company has also received a few million in Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation money, adding another federal connection to the costly spectacle surrounding Trump’s troubled Reflecting Pool.
Trump has responded by boasting about the new surveillance and threatening anyone who might interfere with the pool. As usual, the president’s rhetoric is considerably more dramatic than the available evidence of actual vandalism.
“This will be different, but any Vandals that try to prove the point otherwise, will GO TO JAIL! We are watching very closely, and security cameras have been installed,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“Reports are that it’s looking beautiful, and will only get better, subject to NO VANDALISM, with time.”
Trump did not explain how the Reflecting Pool would continue getting better with time. The notion that the pool liner might somehow improve on its own only adds another absurd layer to an episode already dominated by faulty repairs and imaginary saboteurs.
There may be one practical benefit to keeping cameras pointed at the pool around the clock. If the liner starts falling apart again, the surveillance system could capture the moment that the latest repair effort begins to fail.
Other cameras have been focused on the Reflecting Pool since June, even though the article says it was already clear that vandalism had not caused the damage. The contractor’s poor repair work remained the actual problem cited in the account.
Nevertheless, an unnamed Interior Department spokesperson defended the cameras by blaming political activists. The statement presented the administration’s accusation as established fact despite the lack of evidence described in the article.
“Due to an increase in vandalism by leftist activists surrounding the Reflecting Pool earlier this year, cameras were set up to ensure that no more damage is done to this historic site,” the spokesperson said.
The administration’s camera deployment is not confined to the Reflecting Pool. Cameras are also being placed where Trump hopes to construct his proposed giant arch, which he has described as a “top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch.”
That expansion turns a ridiculous pool dispute into something considerably more ominous. The administration is placing surveillance equipment around prominent parts of the nation’s capital while conservatives portray Washington as a lawless disaster that required Trump’s intervention.
The administration already has a contract with Flock to install readers that scan license plates throughout the city. Armed National Guard troops have also been roaming Washington for more than a year, and the article says they are not scheduled to leave until Trump does.
Congress and the Supreme Court have not stopped these actions, leaving Trump without meaningful resistance from institutions capable of constraining him. The result is a capital increasingly shaped by his personal fixations, from a defective pool liner to an enormous proposed arch.
Meaningful oversight, the article argues, will not arrive unless Democrats retake Congress. Until then, the public remains stuck funding Trump’s escalating Reflecting Pool obsession and the broader surveillance apparatus being built around his paranoia.
