“What if the other side had done it? What if in early January 2017, Democrats similarly attired and armed had stormed the Capitol and attempted to keep Congress from receiving the Electoral College results for the 2016 presidential election?…
“There can be no soft-pedaling what happened and no absolution for those who planned, encouraged and aided the attempt to overthrow our democracy. Love of country demands nothing less,”
Karl Rove, January 6, 2022, Wall Street Journal
What if? Well, for one thing, it would be unjustified, and yet still more justified than the MAGAs in 2020. At least in 2016, there was already evidence that the Russians had manipulated our electorate to help benefit Trump. Additionally, Hillary had easily won the popular vote. There wouldn’t be a real leg to stand on (Democrats don’t do such things), but there would be more than what happened in 2020.
As for what if? The Republicans would have immediately formed a special committee in Congress and the Attorney General would likely have immediately established a temporary division to handle the entire investigation. Democrats in Congress would have joined the committee, deeply disturbed by what happened. If Hillary had given the same speech that Trump gave, she would already be arrested for inciting a revolt, something.
Some of the more cynical liberals are pointing out that Rove helped build the beast that became Trump and the trouble had been brewing for five years prior to January 6th. All true enough, but all irrelevant to the point that Rove did not have to write a Wall Street Journal piece that effectively indicted the entirety of the Republican party for not only allowing January 6th but then allowing it to matter less and less.
Twitter had quite a bit to say and we’ll try to bring you a sampling because Rove’s article dominated the morning far more than Biden’s speech:
1. Karl Rove is a shitty human being.
2. Karl Rove helped create the monster that perpetuated the big lie that fueled January 6th.
3. DEMs didn't do an insurrection.
4. Karl Rove *gasp* said a true thing.Somehow, all 4 are true. https://t.co/ntCCWi2IOS

People are forgetting how Karl Rove helped the republican party adopt outright corruption as its primary operating method. https://t.co/xQTLveT5Zv

The above is 100% true, but again, he didn’t need to write today’s article, which should be the only real subject. For today.
