On Saturday, CNN aired a segment starring Paula Reid where she criticized Melania Trump selling NFT’s, citing negative things that “critics” have been saying about the former First Lady, although she did not clarify any further. It began with a pre-recorded explanation of Melania’s new business venture, including the fact that she is selling the artwork for $180 a piece, and then segued into a live interview with Kate Bennett.
In the interview, Reid told Bennett that critics are saying, “this is nothing but a cash grab, not to mention highly unusual for a former First Lady.” While Bennett agreed that it is “not exactly what most do after leaving the White House”, it important to note that the ex-FLOTUS is not the only public figure involved in the cryptocurrency business, and other celebrities with NFT’s include Tom Brady, Snoop Dogg, Lindsey Lohan, Mark Cuban, and Paris Hilton.
Bennett also noted that Melania is “unpredictable”, which is true not just now, but in the past has well, as she has deviated in many areas from the paths of other First Lady’s that preceded her. In fact, many people are actually making the comparison between Melania’s NFT’s and Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming”, because while Michelle’s path was a bit more traditional, both earned their creators an influx of cash after leaving the White House.
Reid also asked Bennett whether she believed that Melania’s online business was “surprising.” While Bennett was more vague in her direct answer to this question, she did mention that the Trump family’s claim that proceeds would be going to charity was unconfirmed, and that “questions from CNN as to how much and which programs have gone unanswered.”
