Thomas Sibick, who was arrested after participating in the Capitol insurrection on January 6, is seeking the right to use his social media, dating apps, and job search websites after a judge banned him from most online activity. Sibick was one of the only rioters to appear so rattled and regretful after being arrested, and is even reported to have asked to be put in solitary confinement to get away from other insurrectionists in prison.

Currently, Sibick is sentenced to home confinement while he awaits his trial, but he has been forbidden from using social media, attending political rallies, watching politics on cable television, and more. Now, he is asking the judge to lift his internet bans so that he can search for a job, and interact with women.

Sibick lives in Buffalo, New York, but when he drove up to Washington D.C. for the “march” on the Capitol back in January, he ended up having multiple charges against him, including assaulting a police officer. Even though he has been let out of prison and was allowed to stay home until his trial comes, his lawyer says that he needs access to social media sites so he can “interact with members of the opposite gender for the purpose of establishing a friendship.”

The charges against Sibick could end up in severe punishment long-term, as he is accused of stealing the badge of a DC police officer named Michael Fanone, who passed away after being knocked unconscious during the riots and suffering a heart attack. After participating in those riots, Sibick then pleaded to leave prison or even be put in solitary confinement, with his lawyer calling the prison wing where other rioters were held “toxic” and “cult-like”.
