Early Thursday morning, Donald Trump Junior sent out a tweet asking why the media was ignoring something he said Democrats on the Select Committee tasked with the January 6 investigation had been up to: Altering evidence.

It’s a tactic often employed by his father, to state something as a fact and ask why nothing is being done about it, when it never actually happened in the first place. In the former president’s case, the most obvious example of that would be his constant insistence that “voter fraud” wasn’t being investigated after the 2020 election.

Junior took the same tack:

Why is the media not talking about Schiff etc altering the text messages at his sham committee? You’d think given his extensive history with magically altered messages it would be a really big deal that he’s at it again. Sorry forgot he’s a Dem so it’s fine. Nothing to see here!

At issue was the fact that in a graphic used by Rep. Adam Schiff, a period was inadvertently added to the text of a message sent by Jim Jordan to Mark Meadows, Trump’s former Chief of Staff. The errant punctuation changed nothing about the message, which detailed why and how some believed that former Vice President Mike Pence could have overturned the election in favor of Trump.

This tactic is nothing new, unfortunately. And it’s not the first time a Trump has accused Adam Schiff of lying. During his first impeachment trial, the former president implied over and over that Schiff had fabricated the transcript of the telephone conversation in which Trump clearly attempted to blackmail the president of Ukraine into giving him “dirt” on his then-opponent, Joe Biden.

We’re not likely to have seen the last of this kind of evasiveness and deceit, since Meadows had already given around 9,000 pages of evidence to the Select Committee before he decided to stop cooperating and was subsequently cited for contempt of Congress.

And we all know Trump Junior, like his dad, can’t pass up a lie he knows will stick in his followers’ heads.
