On Tuesday, the Biden Administration quietly reversed Donald Trump’s order from December of last year that rolled back low-flow requirements on showerheads and other water fixtures. Under Trump, the Department of Energy exempted certain appliances and consumer fixtures from energy standards as part of a larger, last-minute act as president to ease restrictions on almost all energy consumption of oil, gas, and coal in order to achieve “dominance” over the rest of the world in the production of such things.
The Trump rule change came after the president complained about the inconvenience of showers and toilets, especially when it came to rinsing his infamously terrible hair. In July of that year, Trump had groused about it at a White House event:
So shower heads — you take a shower, the water doesn’t come out. You want to wash your hands, the water doesn’t come out. So what do you do? You just stand there longer or you take a shower longer? Because my hair – I don’t know about you – but it has to be perfect.
He also claimed in 2020 that people were actually using more water with low flow toilets due to regulations:
People are flushing toilets 10 times, 15 times, as opposed to once.
America laughed at the time at the ridiculousness of hearing the president talking about toilets and showers and “perfect” hair, but stopped laughing when his Energy Department instituted the new regulations. Trump used an end-around scheme to implement the new rules, basically redefining what a showerhead is and declaring that multiple nozzles could all carry the same amount of water at once, rather than combined.
For nearly 30 years, federal law has maintained a limit of 2.5 gallons per minute to come out of a showerhead. In 2013, the Obama Administration, in response to manufacturers creating fixtures with multiple heads, adjusted the rule to ensure that the limit applied to the entire shower. Biden has rolled back Trump’s rollback, effectively bringing us back to Obama’s 2013 standard.
We’re just glad to finally wash our hair of yet another highlight of Trump’s idiocy.
