After a positive COVID-19 test before the first 2020 presidential debate, Donald Trump initiated a cover-up of the results, and as more information comes out, it appears his family members may have had a big hand in that outrageous lie. The knowledge about this incident will be brought to light further by Mark Meadows, former Chief of Staff in the Trump White House, in his upcoming book.

As Greg Sargent put it in his political column for The Washington Post, “The Trump family has long treated rules and laws as nuisances that are only for the little people. […] multiple people around Trump, including his wife, Melania Trump, and his kids Donald Jr. and Eric, all sat maskless at the Sept. 29 debate, according to contemporaneous reports, despite the fact that debate attendees were required to wear masks.”

When the news broke that Donald Trump’s positive result came even before that debate, his family’s behavior during the event became even more sickening than it had been originally. All the members of Trump’s family, including Donald himself, refused to mask up even when asked repeatedly, and all this with the knowledge that they had been directly exposed to the virus, or in the former president’s case, actually have contracted it.

Reports say not just that they initially entered the building without masks, but they also refused to put one on when directly asked by a doctor from the Cleveland Clinic, who requested that they follow the rules as well as offering them surgical masks if they did not bring their own.

I witnessed a Cleveland Clinic doctor remind Trump's guests to wear a mask, even offering them surgical ones on the off chance they didn't have one. None of them put on a mask.

While this is not the first time that one of Trump’s malicious schemes has brought negative attention to his family members as well, it is certainly one of the most astonishing and horrendous incidents. The fact that they would decline to wear masks in a situation where they should not have even been out in public is more than just a simple anecdote, but serves as proof that even in a situation that could be potentially fatal to others they will still think of themselves first.
