Even in retrospect, we continue to learn about how little Trump knew about government, even after serving four years as president. Mark Meadows memoir describes Trump as never more despondent than when the SCOTUS refused (unanimously) to not hear his case. It was likely the easiest decision the court has made in its history.

The biggest reason that the Texas’s A.G. filed the case is that when a state sues another state, the Supreme Court has “original jurisdiction,” meaning it doesn’t go through the normal process, it goes straight to the SCOTUS. But 99% of the time, the SCOTUS appoints a special master to hear the case and make a recommendation. Good luck getting that overturned.

The SCOTUS didn’t need to hear any more on this case, it was that ridiculous.

Trump just had to think that he started out with three votes because obviously his three justices would be loyal, and obviously the other three conservative justices wanted him. He still hasn’t figured out that government doesn’t work by who owes who a favor at any given point and that a state cannot sue another state because they don’t like how the electors were chosen. Maybe California and New York could’ve joined on Pennsylvania and Michigan’s side! Or, maybe, instead of everyone suing everyone and the SCOTUS deciding every presidential election, we just vote and then count them.

But Meadows writes that Trump was sure that this was his ticket. Link:

The former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows wrote in his new memoir, “The Chief’s Chief,” that he had never seen Donald Trump look as “despondent” as he was when the Supreme Court rejected a long-shot bid by Texas to overturn the 2020 US election results.

Texas’ lawsuit argued that Joe Biden’s victories in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Georgia should be thrown out over unsubstantiated allegations of widespread voter fraud. The suit said the Republican-led legislatures in all four states should be allowed to select a pro-Trump slate of electors to hand Trump a victory. The case was supported by 18 Republican attorneys general, as well as a majority of House Republicans.

It was supported by 18 A.G.s, not because it was a real case, but because attorney generals are elected, and thus, if there is no real penalty, why wouldn’t a red-state attorney general join the lawsuit?

It is so sad to think of Trump as “despondent.”
