In a bizarre turn of events in an ongoing investigation that has been near impossible to follow, there are now indications that the Michigan Attorney General’s office is looking at charges against school officials that had a meeting with Ethan Crumbley and may or may not have known that he had the handgun at the school or access to the handgun.
We at this site are all for anything that increases the responsibility of anyone who may have forewarning of a threat to our children in schools. But those concerns simply have to be balanced against what is and is not fair with respect to hold people criminally liable.
The information in the report below as to why they might hold school officials accountable is difficult to understand in a complex situation, but from Rawstory:
“In this case, a lot could have been done different. I mean at that meeting he was allowed to go back to school,” McDonald said during an interview with ABC‘s Good Morning America. “We know that he either had that weapon with him or someplace where he could have stored it in the school,” she said. “But he had it in the school, there’s no question. And leaving the decision to parents about whether he goes home or not.”
Admittedly, the above is almost useless as information regarding grounds for looking into possible charges. What meeting? When? The day of the shooting? Who called the parents? Which parent? What did the Crumbleys (just horrible people) say? Did the school know that the parents were 50% of the problem?
So, in terms of why the Michigan Attorney General is looking at school officials with regard to criminal charges, that is still basically unknown. We do know they are.
And again, if all these people can be held accountable, at what point do the gun manufacturers that market these things to dangerous people become accountable? …The moment they change the laws because as of now, one cannot even sue the gun manufacturers, never mind hold them criminally liable.
We support putting more emphasis and responsibility onto parents, school administrators, etc. for school shootings, in the right circumstances. But one must be extremely careful. Emotions are high, people’s hearts are broken, everyone is looking for someone to blame, hindsight is 20/20, and we generally don’t hold people criminally liable in this country for failing to stop a crime, that’s a really slippery slope.
This should be watched closely.
