A lot of stars had to align for Joe Biden and Barack Obama to become best friends, and they are, best friends.
They were quite different. Biden was the statesman, the rock of the Senate, and – at the time, beloved by everyone on both sides. Obama was the newcomer, having spent only two years in the Senate, barely over 40, a young black man on the rise, very very divisive, even in his own party, prior to the nomination. There wasn’t a lot of overlap.
And yet on one of the nights of the Democratic convention, the Biden grandkids, and the Obama girls, got together in a hotel room together to watch it all on television, they had mattresses on the floor, pizzas ordered, both men describe it as the night they decided that this all might work out.
Fast forward to the end, all the way to the end (or what we all thought was the end) it was Obama who awarded Joe Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, “with distinction,” joining Pope John Paul II and small select list of twenty others. It wasn’t just the act of a friend and brother, it was the act of someone who appreciated that Joe Biden had given everything he had to the country.
Little did either of them know.
Regardless, today – again, Obama showed his class and wished Biden a happy birthday while also noting Biden’s service, namely, shepherding a much-needed bill through Congress. They are not just friends. According to Business Insider:
“Happy birthday to my friend and my brother, @POTUS!” the former president tweeted to Biden, who served as his vice president from 2009 to 2017.
In his birthday note, Obama also touted the recent signing of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill into law, which cemented a major legislative accomplishment for the Biden administration.
“Thanks for giving all of us the gift of better infrastructure. Grateful for all you’re doing to build this country back better,” Obama added.

Sometimes it’s nice to just leave a feel-good political story alone. This would seem like one of those times.
