The scene: A Texas megachurch led by the notorious Pastor John Hagee. The congregation is fired up. This is the “Reawaken America” conference, a QAnon-linked gathering of the patriotic faithful.
Songs are sung. Bible verses are shouted. And, prompted from the stage, a chant breaks out:
Let’s go, Brandon!
At this point, if you don’t know what that means, you live under a rock. But more important than the sentiment it stands for in this case are the actual words that the phrase is code for. Imagine walking into a church, any church, and hearing the parishioners shouting “F**k Joe Biden!”
I get that Pastor John Hagee of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio is not known for his subtlety. He’s like Pat Robertson without the careful consideration before he speaks. But to imagine a church chanting a curse at any person, let alone cursing the President of the United States, is incredible.
And it is a curse, not just because it’s a curse word: Substitute the less offensive “damn” into that phrase, and it still works. This church is literally cursing someone to bad fortune and damnation, all because the guy they wanted to win the presidency didn’t win.
What happened to everything being God’s will?
This is not a thing that happened all on its own, either. You can see in the video below, a church leader is actually leaning out toward the crowd, pointing his microphone into the audience to amplify them as they chant the phrase and clap their hands.
This is absolutely disgraceful. But the worst part is, this is simply another example of what has happened to evangelical voters. I don’t know if you know this, but “evangelical” used to mean people who were the most devoted to the teachings of kindness and peace in Christianity.
But after they elected a racist, selfish president who was credibly accused of heinous crimes, it seems that dedication has gone out the window.
Watch the two clips, showing how everyone in the church is participating, then showing how the entire thing is being led from the worship stage:

Here’s another angle. This wasn’t a spontaneous crowd chant. This was led from the stage. pic.twitter.com/tWh9vvasau

People are absolutely disgusted:
Such pious Christian behavior at this “church”. https://t.co/80XOJ42ORy

This is not a church service it’s a political rally. It’s also a prime example of why more people are turned off by and leaving organized religion. https://t.co/QvdAuDqlti

Churches that weigh in on political matters should be taxed. https://t.co/IJWl2fs2Uy

Does this qualify as "politics" in a church, meaning they lose tax exempt status? https://t.co/gjMOmyzkKW

The last five years gave a certain segment of the church the permission to strip away even the pretense that holiness matters. They’re fighting their “righteous” cause, and increasingly anything goes. https://t.co/6VDdj0u57Z

Another money laundering fraud parading themselves as a pastor as fake Christians spew hate disguised as religious freedom in a church that should be taxed since they are a cult weighing in on politics. This is gross. https://t.co/3kiZ5Njwyf
