It is conceivable that someone could have some success in running against Trump, but it seems like it would have to be someone who could be just as big a bully, someone like Chris Christie. It will not be Mike Pence.
However, Trump’s comments released this last week about it being “common sense” to want Pence strung up has some former Pence staffers talking.
Alyssa Farah, who was once Pence’s press secretary before she went on to become Trump’s White House Director of Strategic Communications, had some choice words for Trump after hearing his comments:
“It’s comments like that that will never make me feel bad for never again defending Donald Trump, because as you said it’s completely indefensible.”
It is almost indefensible that she ever felt bad not defending Trump. Farah had some other words about not worrying about Pence:
“What about the other 535 lawmakers who don’t have security details?”
“It was fine that their lives might be threatened because of this? It’s just absurd, it’s indefensible, and I have to hope that conservatives and Republicans of good faith hear things like that and say, ‘We don’t need four more years of this man.”
We didn’t need the original four years, nor the year of the campaign prior to it, nor this year after it. Farah went on to talk about Pence’s deferential nature and pride in some of the things Pence and Trump did together, but then made it clear that Pence will never forget that day.
There’s aspects of the record they did together that I know Pence is proud of, but I know he is ashamed of that day, he is ashamed of how the former president conducted himself.”
When Farah was asked if Pence would run against Trump she might have reached a bit:
“I think he will.” (Though she said she didn’t know any more than anyone else.)
“There’s this belief that people are just going to clear the field for Trump. I actually think some folks are teeing up to run … and it’s a good thing for the party. A coronation of Donald Trump would be the worst thing both for the party, but more importantly for the country.”
Farah may be a bit detached from reality, but that’s what rage will do to a person and we’re likely to hear more and more rageful people from the Trump administration come out and talk due to the “common sense” quote.
