Sports commentators are not usually the type to take sides in anything, be it politics, science, or anything controversial. But on Sunday, broadcasting from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, a few members of football royalty had some stern words for Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers was recently diagnosed with COVID-19, and it turned out he had been lying about his vaccination status all season as the NFL struggled to achieve full compliance among players and coaches.
Legendary former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, whose face has beamed into living rooms every Sunday for almost 30 years, was the most pointed in his criticism of Rodgers:
I’ll give Aaron Rodgers some advice. It would have been nice if he had just come to the Naval Academy and learned how to be honest. Learned not to lie. Because that’s what you did, Aaron. You lied to everyone. I understand ‘immunized.’ What you were doing was taking stuff that [you thought] would keep you from getting COVID-19. You got COVID-19. Ivermectin is a cattle dewormer. Sorry, folks, that’s what it is. We are a divided nation politically. We are a divided nation on the COVID-19, whether or not to take the vaccine. And unfortunately, we’ve got players that pretty much think only about themselves. And I’m extremely disappointed in the actions of Aaron Rodgers.
It was a devastating blow, given to the cheers of hundreds of Naval Academy cadets in attendance. Bradshaw wasn’t alone in his righteous anger. Michael Strahan, Jimmy Johnson, and Howie Long all joined the Hall of Famer in dressing down the Packers’ pigskin slinger — who may be destined for the Hall of Fame himself one day.
Rodgers is notorious for not handling criticism well, and he has already called out the “woke mob” for “canceling” him, two things that don’t exist. Let’s hope he can avoid giving up a sack like this in the future and just take Bradshaw’s advice.
