Shawn Parcells, the man who reviewed the police sh00ting of 18-year-old Mike Brown in 2014 — which set off nationwide protests in the Black Lives Matter movement — is finally getting his due.

The man who introduced himself as “professor” and blamed gullible people who actually believed he was a doctor was convicted on Friday of three counts of felony theft and three misdemeanor charges of body desecration, all stemming from improper examinations of agency shootings.

Posing as an expert, Parcells presented autopsy findings he was in no way qualified to make in the Ferguson, Missouri case seven years ago. County, state, and federal authorities ultimately declined to charge Officer Darren Wilson with any wrongdoing connected to his actions.

Although the protests afterward were mainly due to Brown having been unarmed and Wilson not being charged, it is likely that the outcome may have been different, had an actual doctor performed the autopsy and review of Brown’s body.

From the Kansas Reflector:

Parcells provided autopsy services under an assortment of his companies for coroner’s offices in Missouri and Kansas, and solicited his services to families online. He came under scrutiny after exaggerating medical credentials.

In addition to the criminal case, the state of Kansas filed a civil complaint in Shawnee County District Court to seek restitution for alleged violations of the Kansas False Claims Act and the Kansas Consumer Protection Act. The court banned Parcells from performing autopsies until resolution of the civil litigation.

Parcells’ sentencing in this case is scheduled for January 10th. But because he charged fees for his autopsy services, Parcells was also charged in federal courts with ten counts of wire fraud, the blanket description for getting paid for something you didn’t actually deliver. Parcells had no medical training and never even had a pathologist present while he performed the services.

The federal charges could result in 20 years in prison if he is convicted.
