In a conversation with CNN’s Jake Tapper excerpted from the network’s Trumping Democracy: An American Coup, former Communications Director Alyssa Farah described what she thought might happen if the ex-president were to gain power once again.
There were things that he wanted to do when he was in power the first time that [were] well beyond the scope of what the US president should be able to do, but oftentimes it was simply the motivation of hoping to win reelection that kept him from doing things.
That’s terrifying: We know how bad he actually was, but to find out he would have been much worse if he hadn’t had to worry about being reelected is just awful.
Although Trump still hasn’t officially committed to a 2024 run, it is widely expected. And Farah got very specific when it came to details on what Trump might do if he were to regain the Oval Office:
Whether it’s weaponizing the justice department against political opponents, whether it’s going after the free press, he would certainly be open to using the military for political reasons as well.
Nothing good could come from allowing Trump back into the White House, for sure, but to imagine him fulfilling all of his wildest dreams with what he would surely consider a mandate — no matter how small his victory — is a truly troubling prospect.
In fact, no one who has worked with Trump in the past has had anything but a bleak assessment for how he might govern if given another shot at leading the country, other than his biggest fans in Congress and those still beholden to him through non-disclosure agreements and unspoken threats.
But every time a former insider comes forward with new information as to what the inner workings of Trump’s mind were while he was in office, it makes it just that much more nervous to think that he might be back in that position again one day.
