On Wednesday during a climate conference, Ted Cruz made an embarrassing slip-up when he incorrectly claimed that none of the Republicans on stage with him had a private jet. He did this in an attempt to attack and humiliate the Biden Administration. However, it quickly came back to haunt him when he was informed that Sen. Rob Portman, who was standing just next to him, indeed owns a private jet.
Whoops.
This is just one example of a Republican making a public statement without any real knowledge of the subject beforehand, especially when speaking negatively about a Democratic opponent. Ted Cruz is particularly infamous for his hypocrisy. It would be hard to forget last winter when he spoke about helping Texans through their unprecedented blackouts due to blizzards, only to take his family away on a tropical vacation.
Cruz’s statement was so obviously wrong that it deserves a face-palm. It is no surprise that Portman owns a private jet when taken into consideration that he has a net worth of over $10,000,000 according to Open Secrets in 2018 and Roll Call in 2021. The fact that Cruz had to be alerted about Portman’s jet from off camera was a big blow to his triumphant attack on John Kerry, the Democrat he had been trying to insult.
Hopefully Ted Cruz learns a lesson this time around about thinking before you speak. When a politician has to be corrected from someone off of the camera, it doesn’t usually spark trust in that candidate for voters. It certainly did little to help prove the generalization he was attempting to make about liberals, and instead it turned the finger around to point at his own party.
