Scott Fairlamb, a former Mixed Martial Arts fighter who participated in the Capitol breach on January 6, is the target of federal prosecutors’ harshest sentencing recommendation so far.

He is the first of more than 100 people who are charged with assaulting Capitol police to be sentenced. If the judge in the case follows the prosecutorial guidance, Fairlamb’s outcome could become a benchmark for others facing the same charges.

Prosecutors have asked the judge to sentence Fairlamb to nearly 4 years in prison.

The defendant was caught on film punching a police officer in the head after breaking into the building. In the sentencing memo for Fairlamb, prosecutors quoted him:

[Fairlamb] joined the storming of the police line on the West Terrace, obtaining a police baton and screaming ‘What Patriots do? We f*ckin’ disarm them and then we storm the f*ckin’ Capitol!

After exiting the U.S. Capitol, Fairlamb aggressively followed a line of dramatically out-numbered Metropolitan Police Department officers, screaming vitriol at them as they attempted to traverse the over-run Terrace.

After isolating an MPD officer from his fellow officers, Fairlamb shoved the officer and then punched his face shield.

As the day went on, circumstances only got worse for Capitol police. Many were injured and some even lost their lives.

Fairlamb faces two charges. One is his assault on the officer, and the other is a more general charge regarding his effort to obstruct congressional certification of the November 2020 election results in which Joe Biden was declared victorious over Donald Trump.

Fairlamb is a Trump supporter, as were all of the rioters on January 6. He is also the sibling of a Secret Service agent, the agent charged with protecting Michelle Obama.

Although Fairlamb will have an opportunity to ask the judge for leniency in his sentencing next Wednesday, odds are not good for him after the disclosure of his extremely disturbing statements and the video footage of his antics at the Capitol.

Let’s hope that this does lead to proper accountability for these rioters’ actions.
