One could easily read the article below as a typical Republican anti-education outlook. After all, kids go off to college and get exposed to all those professors with all that knowledge and they come back far too liberal! It’s terrible what all those people with all the education and experience do to those kids!

However, as you read this, it’s not quite the anti-education thing as the sexist, misogyny that comes out here, as a reliable Republican.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has degrees from Harvard Law and Yale, thinks it might be a “good sign” fewer men are attending college compared to women. DeSantis, addressing the International Boatbuilders Exhibition in Tampa, suggested men aren’t going to college as much as women because they are shunning traditional higher education for trades.

“There was actually an article in the Wall Street Journal recently about, you know, ‘decline in college for men’, or something,” DeSantis continued, deepening his voice briefly for comic effect to introduce the article highlighting that three in five college students are now women, with men feeling “lost.”

“I guess there was a decline in the number of men, the percentage of men going to college or whatever. And they acted like this was a bad thing. And honestly, like, you know, to me, I think that is probably a good sign,” the Governor added.

DeSantis went on to mock college graduates for being “deep in debt” when they could have gone into “useful trades” such as truck driving.

There is actually a good case to be made that we’ve gotten to the point in society where having a college education doesn’t “pay off” like it used to. A college education used to be the entranceway to upper management and a good life. But now with all the student debt and the lack of upper management positions in anything, it’s less and less attractive from a purely economic perspective.

It may well be that a young person is better off going into certain very needed trades that require a lot of training, such as being a welder or electrician. Both trades require a lot of training, both have a high level of responsibility, and both pay damn well. The problem is, DeSantis never really got around to explaining why our daughters and wives would make worse welders or electrictians. He left those “trades” to the men. Is there some reason our girls can’t do things just as well?

As for truck driving? Within fifteen years there will be almost no truck drivers. We absolutely guarantee that the first fully automated vehicles in this country will be commercial trucks. Why would anyone pay someone to do something a computer could do without needing to stop for rest?

But those computers will need electricity, and the buildings in which they’re created need welding. Go get it, girls!
