We recently learned that military commanders of superpower nations (and other nations) do talk occasionally, and General Milley took it upon himself to call the head officers of China’s military after January 6th.

In retrospect, and likely at the time, the call represents the type of judgment and responsibility one wants from a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Intelligence at the time made clear that the Chinese were afraid Trump might attempt a “wag the dog” move as a going-away present, or a last-ditch attempt to throw enough chaos in the air to stay in the White House. Milley made sure that the Chinese knew it wouldn’t happen under his watch.

After all, the military is only under an obligation to carry out lawful orders. Someway, somehow, Milley could have justified inaction by characterizing the order as illegal. As a reward for Milley’s responsible and necessary call, Republican lawmakers are now calling for his resignation.

Trump, of course, the man who led a riot, has called for Milley to be charged for treason. Milley disagrees and so do Americans that fear what Trump might have been capable of doing.

Good Morning America interviewed Robert Costa Monday morning to discuss the book’s coverage of the Milley call, Acosta made clear that Milley was not going rogue. We thank Mediaite for the transcript:

“The Chinese were highly alarmed by what happened on January 6th,” Costa said. “What Chairman Milley was trying to do, as we show in the book, was contain a national security emergency.”

It would seem obvious that in defense of the United States, Milley’s job, it is important to not have the world’s other superpower “highly alarmed” which could lead to a national security emergency.

“He was reading people in. While these calls with General Lee were held on a top-secret backchannel, they were not secret. This was not someone who was working in isolation.”

“He was not going rogue?” ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos asked.

“He was not going rogue,” Costa said. “He was reading people in throughout the national security and military community, trying to contain a situation, and a president who he believed was in serious mental decline.”

The mental decline was obvious to anyone outside the cult, which includes the Chinese. In such an environment, led by such a man, this country’s most mentally sharp people are under a duty to mitigate the danger. That is what Milley did. He did it lawfully and appropriately. Thank you, General.
