As of right now, Bill Barr still has some criminal exposure for actions he took at attorney general. At the very least, Barr faces some uncomfortable moments in front of Congress’s House Select Committee. Criticism about the lack of accountability for the Trump administration can wait for another time. But most certainly, prior to the election, Bill Barr had every reason to fear that if Trump lost the election, Barr could easily face some of the same consequences that fell upon Nixon’s Attorney General, John Mitchell.

Thus, it is not hard to see why Barr might have gotten angrier and angrier throughout 2020 as he saw Trump do one thing after another to drive away voters. Now, according to Business Insider, which has a copy of Bob Woodward’s new book Peril, we find out that Barr put it to Trump in no uncertain terms why Trump was going to lose. In short, Trump is an assh*le and Barr let him know it.

There are a lot of people out there, independents and Republicans in the suburbs of the critical states that think you’re a fcking assh*le. They think you act like an assh*le and you got to, you got to start taking that into account.”

It gets wayyy better. Apparently, Trump was forever demanding that Barr have Jim Comey arrested, along with all the other people involved in “Russia, Russia, Russia.” Barr read the damned Mueller report. Barr knew there was plenty to investigate and probably plenty that still warranted investigation. The last thing Barr (or Trump) needed was some defense attorney demanding all materials gathered in the investigation, proving it was entirely legal and entirely appropriate. Still, Trump demanded Barr do it. Barr dropped some truth on Trump:

“Your base cares about seeing [Comey] and the rest of those guys held accountable, but these other people don’t, They don’t care about your f*cking grievances. And it just seems that every time you’re out there, you’re talking about your goddamn grievances.”

At every point at which we criticized Barr, we did note that he was a genius lawyer and a brilliant person generally. It is what made him so damnably effective as Trump’s “Roy Cohn.” He sure seems to have read the whole Comey thing correctly. Still, Trump wouldn’t follow Barr’s advice. Trump said that his base loved him because he’s a fighter. We speculate (we think we know) that, actually, Trump didn’t give a fck what his base thought. Trump wanted to nail Comey to the wall as revenge, that is what Trump loves.

Given that Trump is never wrong, he likely decided that Barr was wrong. And he lost the election, mostly because he was, and remains, an assh*le. It would be very interesting to inject Barr with some truth serum and find out whether Barr believed that Trump was in cahoots with Putin and a criminal himself.
