Somehow, the fact that Biden asked for the termination of several rejects from the Trump administration became the lead story on Wednesday.
Trump fired Kellyanne Conway, H.R. McMaster, and Sean Spicer (among several other less notable appointees) from their jobs on the “Boards of Visitors” over the military academies. We first termed these cushy positions in our reporting.
It turns out, they are only cushy for the Trump appointees. The jobs traditionally go-to experts or leaders in various fields, not former political appointees.
Jen Psaki was asked about the terminations at the briefing on Wednesday and slammed the issue shut with some wonderful and perfectly-timed snark:
“I will let others evaluate whether they think Kellyanne Conway and Sean Spicer and others were qualified, or not political, to serve on these boards, but the President’s qualification requirements are not your party registration, they are whether you’re qualified to serve and whether you’re aligned with the values of this administration,”
There was a point in time when we felt a little bad for Spicer, having endured the first terrible period of the administration and then, due to Trump’s ire, was denied a chance to meet Pope Francis, which would have had special meaning to Spicer as a devote Catholic.
Whatever warmth we might have felt for Spicer was far more about Trump’s unrivaled pettiness than anything for Spicer and we quickly got over it.
He earned our ire a long time ago and did it again tonight, fighting back – loudly, about his qualifications:
“Tonight, all Trump appointees — including myself — have been kicked off the boards of the United States Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and West Point in an unprecedented move by the Biden administration.
“Don’t you dare ever minimize or question my service to this nation! You got it?”

As a supposed communications expert, Spicer should know that technically, Jen did not actually question his service to the nation. She questioned his qualifications to serve on the board and – given that Trump handed out these jobs weeks prior to leaving office – that the job may have been a gift, political appointment.
Regardless, we seriously doubt that the guy who insisted there were record numbers of people on the Mall scares Jen Psaki.
