Let’s make this very clear. Under the GSA rules and all things right and just, Trump had no business owning and operating the DC hotel business, under a GSA lease for the building. It sat like a fat magnet for corruption and attempts to influence Trump and decisions made by the White House. Thus, it was they could serve $12 coffee drinks and $9.00 orange juices. People would pay.

The Trump Organization likely never had plans to hold the business longer than the original lease, but according to Axios, Trump has to unload it for much less than what he wanted. Apparently, Trump wanted more than $500 million. That makes two of us, but neither of us has the means to get that $500 million. We have some talents that are likely worth more than Trump’s. No one’s asked, but you’ll be the first to know. From Axios’s report:

Trump’s hotels and golf resorts have been hit hard by the COVID shutdowns that have walloped the hospitality industry — worsened for the former president by his lost heat after his 2020 defeat.

When Trump left office, The Washington Post reported that the D.C. hotel had a $170 million loan outstanding, and had seen revenue drop more than 60 percent compared to the previous year.

In early June, the Post reported that Trump had hired the brokerage firm Newmark Group to market the lease.

The original commercial real estate brokerage firm, Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., dropped out following the Capitol riot, Bloomberg reported.

How appropriate? Trump didn’t pay near enough attention to COVID and let it run through the country as a political issue, thus impacting travel everywhere long after it needed to be the concern it remains today. And then the riot, rendering Trump untouchable in the minds of good people. To the extent that Trump isn’t getting his $500 million, he can look himself in the mirror and see exactly how it isn’t worth what he planned.
