We have had an opportunity to report on a lot of exploding news out of the new Vanity Fair report today detailing the behind-the-scenes action at the Aspen Republican gathering, where the major players come to beg for money from the major donors. We reported last night that some of those major donors are sick of Trump’s “sh*tshow” but have no real place to go (other than withholding money) given that Trump “will” win – according to attendees… if he runs.
The more interesting news is that Trump’s obvious heir apparent, Ron DeSantis, has some major problems that, for now, remain hidden, but could burst onto the scene, one of which we’ve already reported upon, that Trump hates his guts. The second of which is that DeSantis basically has no friends:
DeSantis also needs to win reelection in 2022 (a recent poll showed him losing to Republican turned Democrat Charlie Crist). But assuming DeSantis prevails, former staffers told me that his abrasive personality could become a liability under the pressures of a national campaign. DeSantis is known to only trust his wife, Casey, a former newscaster, and his staff has seen heavy turnover.
“He has zero relationships. He just doesn’t speak to you,” one former staffer told me. In May, Politico reported that former DeSantis staffers set up a “support group” to commiserate over their experiences working for him. DeSantis didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Well, Trump didn’t exactly have any “friends,” either. But Trump had something that DeSantis doesn’t have, “hangers on,” due to Trump’s money. There is another difference. Even though Trump had no real friends, he thought and still thinks he has friends and will speak to anyone who likes him. There surely are support groups for people who worked for Trump, too, but Trump has already been president. DeSantis is running as a regular politician. It won’t be so easy when he starts to put together a campaign (assuming Trump doesn’t run) and DeSantis doesn’t have any of the people that know him around to help.
Maybe DeSantis isn’t quite as obvious as an heir apparent. In fact, it now appears that he has some real problems.
