We have already reported upon the House Select Committee on January 6th’s sweeping, jaw-dropping, demand for documents from every conceivable department, from a wide range of dates, in search of answers as to the broadest picture available regarding; “How this happened,” which dropped Wednesday morning. The committee intends to get to the very beginning and very bottom. We could easily write three more reports, it is that critical and that stunning.
It didn’t have to be this way. The House could easily have been forgiven – even applauded – for an intense focus on the five days leading up to January 6th. They could have zeroed in on who was where, who was doing what, who talked to who, and painted a very detailed picture as to those days running up just to January 6th. There were merits to such an approach.
Instead, the committee has gone big, very big, they want to know everything about the Big Lie and then transition how it led to January 6th. We have had prior indications that they intended to get into the Big Lie but nothing like today. Nothing.
The sweeping nature of their demand for documents has all of Washington talking. Anyone reasonably high up in the Trump administration who bent or broke rules should be terrified. There is no place to hide. It is also likely not an accident that this request comes one week after a strange Reuters report saying that the FBI has found “scant” evidence of centralized planning. That’s odd. We the American people have found a shocking amount of evidence of significant centralized planning. Either Reuters got played or we’re getting played.
The committee isn’t getting played and their interests extend all the way to Trump’s mental stability. According to CNN’s Kate Bolduan interview of Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, nothing is off-limits, including whether Trump was in control of his own mind. Oh, and there’s more to come. Lofgren said:
This is just the beginning. We are trying to find out what happened leading up to January 6th, the various elements, the reasoning, who instigated it, why they instigated it and the like. We want to find out every element of it and so we’ve made this request and this is, as I said, just the beginning.
Bolduan asked Lofgren specifically about documents pertaining to the mental stability of Trump. Loftgren wasn’t going to give the game away yet. Clearly, they have indications already and don’t plan on letting witnesses know what’s coming:
“I don’t want to get into what we might find but obviously, what other officials were contemplating or discussing relative to the president could be irrelevant to understanding the entire situation. So, as you said at the outset, this is a very wide-ranging request.”
It is a wide-ranging request because this is a wide-ranging problem that came damned close to stamping out democracy in the United States. If Merrick Garland’s DOJ and FBI can’t get off their asses, or – more likely, are afraid to get off their asses, and get it done, thankfully – it looks like Congress will. They are even going to look at whether Trump had the mental stability to be making decisions at all.
