The National Rifle Association has always been known as a “Safety First” organization, pfft.

Ironically, the statement used to be true. The organization, as late as the 1980s, was primarily a sporting and hunting rights organization, quite literally focused upon sporting shotguns, sporting rifles, and gun safety. And then something changed. Quite obviously, someone on the Right got their mitts on the NRA, convinced them that there was near endless money in their future if they somehow could equate guns with freedom, and – obviously, the Republican party.

It happened, and the country is an infinitely more dangerous place because of it. So it is somewhat ironic – though, admittedly, it is responsible – for the NRA to cancel their national meeting in Houston this coming month due to COVID safety concerns. It may be the first time in decades that the NRA has made a decision based on whether something was safe or not:

Click2 Houston has the details:

The National Rifle Association announced Tuesday that it has canceled its annual meeting, which was set to be held in Houston next weekend, due to COVID-19 concerns.

“Due to concern over the safety of our NRA family and community, we regret to inform you that we have decided to cancel the 2021 Annual Meeting and exhibits. The cancellation applies to all events and meetings that were scheduled in Houston,” the organization released in a statement on Twitter.

We wish our first graders didn’t have to practice “intruder alerts” and rush to lock doors and hide in closets. We are also into safety.

The meeting was scheduled to be at the George R. Brown Convention Center from Sept. 3 to Sept. 5. The NRA meeting is known to welcome thousands of people from all over the world and involves many events, meetings and social gatherings.

Of course, this is the right decision and given the type of people that love and celebrate the NRA, there would likely be a lot of cross-pollination with the anti-vax crowd (Pro-gun in the home, Anti-Vaccine in the body!). Unlike Trump, these people seemed able to identify a superspreader event ahead of time. We acknowledge their responsible decision.
