At every turn of which we’re aware, Mary Trump has been right from the very beginning. To be sure, she has an advantage. She is Trump’s niece, having a father who was his brother. She got to see the entire family dynamic behind the scenes (without signing an NDA). He worked her over financially in one of the most reprehensible ways imaginable, long before it even occurred to him to run for president. Her tax records provided the basis for a bombshell New York Times story that would have finished any other president, with near proof of tax fraud. And she has a Ph.D. in psychology, and though there are a million sub-specialties in psychology, she has enough of the big picture that she’s been telling us what’s been happening since, well, since it happened.

On Friday, she succinctly told Nicolle Wallace, by way of her book, how Trump fits in this country’s political dynamic:

He is a symptom of the disease that has existed in our body politic from its inception, which has – because of our failures to root it out, let alone acknowledge it, been left to metastasize, from increasing levels of hatred and rage on one side to increasing levels of helplessness, stress, and despair on the other, we are headed toward an even darker period in our nation’s history.

She also acknowledged that we have never held powerful white men accountable, going back to Robert E. Lee, and allowing a major political party to base much of its platform on racism. (Pro-Tip, it used to be the Democrats as that party, but back then, the southern conservative man was a Democrat union man, it was only in the 60s and LBJ did things start to turn and fully turn under Reagan. The seamless constant is the conservatives).

Mary explained that Donald gave people permission to be their worst selves, and that is why they loved him, they rewarded him for it. We wrote many times that Trump’s popularity sprung from the fact that he hated liberals as much as they did and he was willing to say it out loud. Mary takes that correct synopsis and takes it to the next logical step, he then allowed them to act on their hatred of liberals, and even worse, on minorities and repressed people of all types.

That is what they love about him and that is why he remains so viable today, why we still have to write about a washed-up president. Having had a taste of what they really want, the MAGA Right is not giving it up now. For now, they don’t trust anyone else to carry on “the mission” quite as well as Trump. And that’s why he can have a rally in the middle of nowhere Alabama and draw 20,000 screaming fans in the midst of an epidemic.
