There is a set of directions that nearly all criminal defendants get from their attorneys. It involves not speaking to anyone about anything unless their attorney is there and the subject matter pertains to something they’ve already discussed and planned. Additionally, defendants are told to be respectful and remorseful, at least about the process, if not the actual crime (if they are insisting they’re innocent). These directions are nothing more than common sense and would be used by anyone reading this.

Landon Copeland of Utah is not using the normal directions (surely against the advice of his attorney). He is a man who fought police on the Capitol steps, taking police batons (not a good idea) and he’s someone who accused the judge of being a “robot” toward him. This is not a good idea when, at the same time he’s giving jailhouse interviews practically confessing to his serious crime, he is also asking the judge to let him out of jail to await his trial. To which, prosecutors have one word, “No.”

None of this should be a surprise when one fails to follow directions. Copeland’s failures are brought to us by Scott McFarlane, Washington’s NBC4 Capitol Hill news reporter. If anyone could identify a “one of a kind” case, it would be McFarlane, who has done dogged work in keeping the country up to date on various Capitol Hill court proceedings.

You will note that the court-ordered psychiatric examination, which seems more than appropriate for a guy who banged his hand against the courthouse door. If he is found to have a condition, then this “one of a kind” case must go through an entirely different set of proceedings. Twitter followers had some comments:
