As we have written over the last two days, we genuinely wish that there was no name-calling and blame assigned to either side in the Afghan debacle. Four U.S. Presidents had an opportunity to improve the situation and get out, they did the former but not the latter. But there is blame being assigned and anger is rising among all those involved.

Today, Rep. Jim Langevin, a Democrat from Rhode Island, was among 10 lawmakers who penned a letter to President Biden in which the group recommended steps needed to improve Afghanistan’s stability as troops were pulled from the country. Langevin also wrote a column for Foreign Policy in which he criticized the administration’s failure to consider the consequences of leaving Afghanistan. But he also left plenty of blame for the Trump administration:

“I suppose we are now experiencing the consequences of not getting ‘into a hypothetical. Public exec*tions and forced marriages are reportedly back. People are fleeing. The Taliban are in Kabul, and the government has fallen. This is a catastrophe.”

“This negligence was par for the course for the last U.S. administration. I am disappointed to see it now. At minimum, the Biden administration owed our Afghan allies of 20 years a real plan. They also owed it to our military service members and their families, particularly the men and women in uniform and their families who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Not to mention the women and girls of Afghanistan who are now experiencing a devastating new reality.”

It is because our hearts pour out for the women and girls that this situation seems too grim and horrific to be pointing fingers. But if one is going to get political, it is worth pointing out that under the last administration, debacles like this happened all the time. Additionally, the Russian embassy was left untouched. Make of that what one will as to whether it plays a role in this matter.
