If you sat at an editorial meeting yesterday at The Onion, and someone threw out an idea, “What if we had a story with Trump saying, ‘Can you imagine if all this virus stuff had happened under me, what they woulda’ said?” And the whole room would roll onto the floor in laughter, “Do it! Do it!”… before he actually says it.

The Onion never got their shot. Too late.

Trump went on Dan Bongino‘s show on Saturday night and like all Trump interviews or “discussions,” they simply meandered through mostly nothingness. At one point, they discussed the Covid-19 pandemic, with Bongino mentioning the explosion of cases. Trump’s response belongs in the Trump Hall of Fame:

Well, first of all, could you imagine if I were president right now and we had this massive attack from the coronavirus, you know, now they like to call it, they have new names and they have other new names, but it’s exactly what we had, we had the same thing. If that were me, they would say ‘what a horrible thing, what a horrible job.’ These are numbers in some cases that are equivalent to what it was, but we don’t hear that.

We do hear that people are doing a horrible job, we’re hearing governors in Florida and Texas talking about removing all safety precautions, “Don’t Fauci my Florida,” and unlike under Trump, we have a president that is doing everything in his power to get people vaccinated.

I think I have to be a big vaccine fan because I’m the one who got it done so quickly, we got it less nine months, it was supposed to take five years. It was supposed to take one year and they missed conservatively. NO ONE said it would take “five years.” Some vaccines take longer to develop because so many fewer people get the diseases it is hard to get independent data on whether they work or not. Additionally, the U.K. got it done in 8 months and two weeks, not to blow Trump’s bubble, but…

They would have never even gotten it done so I am a big fan. At the same time, I’m a fan of our freedoms and people have to make that choice for themselves and I would recommend they get it and get it done and they’re being protected and the vaccines turned out to be a tremendous thing and I also though feel strongly here are some people who do not want to do it and I really believe in somebody’s choice, somebody’s freedom and that’s the way it is.

That is the way it is. Someone chooses their freedom to ignore science and listen to DeSantis, and next thing you know, some really sweet guy who lives ten miles down the beach an is vaccinated has delta variant breakthrough COVID and feels sick as…

Doesn’t matter. But could you imagine what we would’ve said and done to Trump had this happened under him?
