At times, it seems like a second Civil War is all but inevitable now. It really does, and anyone who argues needs to read some of the tweets and statements made by the MAGAs to otherwise decent people. Or, one can simply take Liz Cheney’s words when furious with Jim Jordan, “You fcking did this!” and by “This,” Cheney meant an attempted coup.

We used to acknowledge that we were already amidst a cold Civil War (obviously), one that got hot on January 6th. But we dismissed the idea of a real battle because how could anyone topple a government with satellites, GPS-guided missiles, electrical control of cell phone towers, the internet, and F-16s. But as we read more and more about the events of January 6th, one almost wonders whether the entirety of the U.S. military would be on the side of the Constitution.

Perhaps we are being too pessimistic. There is no question that the MAGAs are a clear minority, but the South was a clear minority in the last Civil War, and who actually “comes out on top,” matters less than the humanity destroyed in the process. Perhaps we are overreacting. Secession should strongly be considered if war lingers on the horizon.

If you believe that we’re engaging in hyperbole, listen to a message left on “Officer” Fanone’s phone:

Officer Fanone was part of a police force protecting the Constitution and the operation of the U.S. Government. It is not a military force, but it’s not that far removed from a National Guard force or domestic military. Relatively few Republicans actually objected on January 6th. This was a clear formality set out in the Constitution. And yet an American wants Fanone dead, for doing his job?

Yes, it’s one message by one guy. Yes. And yet there were thousands and thousands there that day and tens of thousands that wish they were there. We are not immune to internal violence on a massive scale.
