This is horrifically symbolic.

First, it is critical to note that others in the media often confuse the reason that January 6th rioters remain in jail. We see it all the time, the media says they are imprisoned or imply that they are sentenced. This is not the case. These are people in jail awaiting their trial. They are not prison. They have been denied bail due to the danger they continue to represent. The vast majority of rioters have been allowed out on bail as they await trial. In those few cases where rioters remain in jail, prosecutors have presented ample evidence demonstrating what might happen if these people are released. We see this confusion in the media all the time. It is important to get straight.

Thus it is that on the exact same day that the House begins its first January 6th attempted-coup investigation, Representatives, Gaetz, Gohmert, Paul Gosar, and Marjorie Taylor-Greene will hold a press conference addressing the mistreatment of the rioters that remain in jail. The symbolism is breathtaking and it is no accident. This is meant to be a political fight.

Democrats and a few Republicans want answers as to why so many thousands descended on the Capitol incited by Donald Trump, how it appeared so organized, and if it was organized, who was involved in organizing the greatest threat to democracy since the Civil War. Strangely, the people who support Trump the most, a few of the Congressman that might have close ties to January 6th, are more worried about the treatment of those rioters still in jail and are trying to confuse the issues.

We noted previously how Ashli Babbit has become lionized on the Right as a martyr. We said at the time that the next step would be to label those kept in jail awaiting trial as “political prisoners.” We did not make an insightful and genius prediction, it is simply the next obvious step in moving the MAGA cult toward an attempted fascist takeover of the government by enraging them further. The injustice of it all, a tiny protest, and overreaction. What to do if you’re a MAGA?

Each of these people remaining in jail has an attorney. If the defendant is facing mistreatment in jail or doesn’t deserve to be held in jail at all, those arguments can be made individually in a court and we have reported on those individual cases as they arise. The only reason to have a press conference concerning this collection of jailed defendants as a group is to characterize the group as mistreated and the only way to do that is to assert that they are held for their political views. They are political prisoners.

It is simply stunning that January 6th could happen the way it happened and yet, because it came down from Donald Trump, these people must be defended and made heroes. Just this last week Trump said there was a lot of love at that protests. Let’s ask ourselves this. If Trump and the powerful MAGAs in the White House and Congress were not involved in planning January 6th, would we see such a concerted effort to keep the facts from the public?
