As we noted in another column, a new book is expected out by two of our favorite reporters over at the Washington Post, Phillip Rucker and Carol Leonnig (that is a lot of brain matter to fit into one book), due on July 20th and it has its first excerpts published in the WaPo today. The excerpt presents some astonishing descriptions of election night within the White House, where the lurch and his family did not expect to lose.
The Trumps had been briefed earlier in the day, extensively, and then probably briefed extensively again, about what to expect. It was the same briefing we had sort of all given ourselves. Trump would begin the evening ahead because the first vote totals would come from people who voted on election day, and then he’d have to hang on for dear life as mail-in votes came in, later in the evening. Some of us actually went to sleep assuming Trump had done it again, threaded the needle, convinced we were nearing the end of democracy.
The Trumps stayed up and must have forgotten their briefing. As one might expect, Eric flipped out first, right after Fox News declared Arizona blue for Biden. (It was a very early prediction, but done by what most consider the best vote analysis team in the country). Eric didn’t handle the controversial call well, perhaps envisioning prison, a dawning awareness:
“The election is being stolen,” Eric reportedly exclaimed before demanding. “Where are these votes coming from? How is this legit?”
“He yelled at the campaign’s data analysts, as if it were their fault that his father’s early leads over Biden were shrinking. ‘We pay you to do this,’ he said. ‘How can this be happening?'”
We pay you to do… what, Eric? Sit at a computer and tell you what you want to hear? Hire us!
He is yelling at his campaign team’s data people and screaming at them because they’re not doing it right! They are supposed to be winning! Work harder!
“How is this legit?” Is he referring to, how is counting “every” vote legit? Even the ones for Biden?
Now, how can this be happening?
Occam says to leave the statement alone and chalk it up to stupid Eric being Eric. That is exactly what we’re going to do. But in the future, we might look at what the Trump family expectations might have been for certain areas… and why. Because we’re still a little wary of what happened in 2016, the perfection in threading that midwestern needle, the same critical focus area that then-Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort handed over to the Russians. And we wonder…
This time, we say Eric is just a stupid putz being a stupid putz. “We pay you to do this…”
