This is particularly stunning, especially for us professional political observers, and especially, especially, those of us political observers who paid pretty close attention to CPAC Dallas.
Few people knew that Trump was going to appear, in fact, it wasn’t even a certainty until the Friday before.
Of course, it was the same Trump speech he’s given since he left office, poor me, big steal… (A new book coming out by Phillip Rucker and Carol Leonigg, just excerpted today, says that on election night 2020, despite the fact that Trump had been briefed on the fact he would definitely take an early lead, but then he would need to see if he held on as the late votes came, despite all that, at 3:00 a.m., when the election started to swing toward Biden, Trump – way back then – started yelling at people that “they’re stealing it! Tell them to stop counting!! They’re stealing it!” So he genuinely believes this stuff).
We got a little diverted. He gives the same speech, except one little detail that went entirely unnoticed. Trump told the unvarnished truth, right out in the open, unguarded, and apparently very much unaware of how deep the admission went.
In the middle of the speech, Trump started talking about the straw poll that they would take about their preferences for the presidential candidate (in 2021 for fffsake) and Trump actually said:
“By the way, you have a poll coming out. I want to know what it is. You know they do that straw poll, right?”
“Now, if it’s bad, I just say it’s fake,” [CROWD LAUGHS] “If it’s good, I say that’s the most accurate poll, perhaps ever.”
Before you move along, look at what the man just admitted to. The vast majority of his speech was about the terrible injustice done upon him by the election. “Rigged!!” And then he just drops his entire M.O. on them and they laugh.
It is all a movie to these people. They know exactly what is happening, they pretend that they don’t know, but they do – he’s telling them! They laugh! They are in on it. It doesn’t matter who got the most votes in the election, the only thing that matters is that they should have won.
It is an absolutely startling admission and realization of the type that doesn’t happen that often, and it took two days for it to really sink it for us. It will never sink in with them. Or it has, they just haven’t noticed.
