Trump was always Trump, from the moment he came down the golden escalator. In fact, Trump has been Trump since he achieved adolescence and never grew out of a bad starting point. We knew what we were getting from Trump while campaigning and when he was elected.
We were getting a dangerously incompetent person who was elected because he was the Republican who hated liberals with the most intensity. We knew that a lot of his voters knew he wasn’t really qualified, but it didn’t matter, they wanted hatred.
Everyone who knew he was completely incompetent were somewhat assuaged by the fact that the country could count upon “the grownups in the room,” to keep us from Trump’s worst impulses and ideas. Trump started out by having some very qualified people in the room. As but one example, Tillerson had no government experience, but he could at least run a large operational entity. There are many others.
We know how it all worked out. In the end, every position had an unconfirmed loyalist. But George Conway says we didn’t know exactly how bad it was behind the scenes. It was so much worse than we thought, that anyone still there by the end is nearly as guilty as Trump.
Conway has a unique voice in this matter because he is married to one of the worst, who stayed on far too long.
On CNN Conway said:
“Nothing was ever enough for Donald Trump,” Conway stated. “And the reason why it got so out of hand was, you know, people didn’t push back at the interim steps. They acceded to some of his desires and wishes in certain ways, and Barr was the biggest — one of the biggest people humoring trump. And it just gets worse and worse and worse.”
He then said that submission to Trump is the only thing that matters to Republicans now.
Conway then indicted Congress with the same charge:
“It goes to the same reason why you see just minor pushback against Marjorie Taylor Greene,” he continued. “They don’t punish her for saying outrageous things. Yet, on the other hand, you’ve got Liz Cheney, who loses her leadership position because she simply told the truth. It’s the same thing.”
Republicans are going to be Republicans. Mitch McConnell is going to ensure that the GOP continues to believe in party over country. But that doesn’t mean it cannot get even worse than that. Look at January 6th and the lack of pushback in Congress to see it playing out right now.
Conway is right.
