According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump and his Vice-President, Mike Pence, had the type of fight only a president like Donald Trump could have with a V.P. It is typical Trump, but what is fairly impressive is Pence’s reaction. It would seem that, behind closed doors, Pence was a little less frightened of Trump than what we’d normally believe… at least after the election.

We should note, as we often do, that it almost seems like a requirement on any left-leaning op-ed site to note that Mike Pence is a despicable human being responsible for thousands of deaths in Indiana, and enabled some of Trump’s worst abuses. All of which is absolutely true. Most then go on to say that he did nothing to redeem himself on January 6th but follow the Constitution. But this website feels compelled to note that on the single biggest day of his life, Mike Pence picked the more difficult and dangerous, but also moral and proper path forward, perhaps saving American democracy, or at least giving it four more years. We should all hope to be our best on the biggest day of our lives.

He is still overall a terrible person. But he is a terrible person who confronted Trump very seriously in early 2021, just prior to the January 6th certification. Rawstory presents the lead up:

The incident reportedly took place in early 2021 when Pence was set to preside over the certification of the 2020 election. Pence’s political committee had just hired Trump’s adviser Corey Lewandowski, prompting Trump to reportedly hold up an article about the news while complaining it made him look like “his team was abandoning him.”

Um, no. His team was moving on from a loss. Trump just didn’t want to accept it. Now Mike stepped up:

“Mr. Pence picked up the article and threw it back at Mr. Trump,” Bender writes. “He leaned toward the president and pointed a finger a few inches from his chest. ‘We walked you through every detail of this,’ Mr. Pence snarled. ‘We did this for you — as a favor. And this is how you respond? You need to get your facts straight.'”

We suspect that very few people have ever confronted Trump with such aggressiveness while confident that he or she was right. We seem to remember Nancy Pelosi doing much the same. We all know what Pence did on January 6th.

No, Pence will never be forgiven for his time in Indiana, nor enabling Trump when Pence could have quit at any point and spilled a lot of beans. But he showed up as an American when things were hardest and he was asked to be at his best. We should all hope that we can say the same someday.

Oh, and, in case we never get the chance? Crumple, crumple, crumple, toss, “Fck you, Don.”
