Yesterday, President Biden put a lot of his presidency on the line when he suggested that the U.S. might actually go door to door offering free vaccinations. Americans are a bit odd in their interactions with the government, some for good reason. Black Americans, immigrants, the poor, the young, and the elderly often don’t fare as well when they have a government representative involuntarily approach them, especially at their residence.
It feels coercive and there are legitimate reasons to push back against government coercion. But Biden never said anything about any coercion.
“Now we need to go to the community by community, neighborhood by neighborhood, and oftentimes, door to door — literally knocking on doors — to get help to the remaining people protected from the virus,
You will note that Biden wasn’t announcing a finalized program in which they would go knocking door to door. On the other hand, the United States is not reaching the needed levels of vaccinations to achieve herd immunity and vaccination rates have plummeted, while the delta COVID variant is becoming the dominant strain in America.
Fox and Friends doesn’t care. Their histrionics were absurd and they are going out of their way to create both confusion and fury over the proposed program. It is called propaganda: Mediaite:
Ainsley Earhardt said: “People are up in arms about this. Because we as Americans can make our own choices for our own families and our own bodies.”
Oh, shut up, Ainsley. Americans are not “up in arms about this” because ninety-eight percent don’t even know about it. Most Americans have far better things to do than watch television news all day and hear about the possibility. Additionally, notice how Ainsley implies that if the government comes to your door, you ARE going to get a needle in the arm? Propaganda. Fox and Friends clearly want people “up in arms about this” because they want people furious at Biden. Nothing has worked yet.
“When someone is knocking at your door with a vaccine, are they going to have the shot in their hand, or are they going to encourage you to go, ask you questions, like the census bureau does? Listen, when you are cooking or watching a movie, do you want someone knocking on your door that you don’t know? That’s a stranger?”
No, Ainsley, not someone like you, who makes millions of dollars a year. They aren’t coming to your neighborhood, Ainsley. But perhaps someone poor, without a car, in a big city, and isn’t net literate and really doesn’t get out much actually would love a knock at the door by someone who is a stranger – with, we are sure, a giant official U.S. Government I.D. prominently displayed – that type of person may very much welcome someone offering to give them the vaccine because they haven’t been able to go line up in cars at Dodger Stadium, and didn’t know that one could make an appointment at Walgreens, which is two blocks off the bus route anyway.
Pete Hegswerth said: “The only answer when the government comes knocking at the door, ‘My body, my choice, see you later’ and shut the door. Ultimately, we are responsible people that can make that call for ourselves.”
Actually, Pete, that is one answer. There is another answer, too; “Oh, thank you! I didn’t know how to do it and I have a hard time getting to the bus now that my granddaughter left for school…”
And nowhere did Biden say it would be a problem if the person slammed the door. They are discussing a service, not anything forced, and would almost surely make it clear that it’s entirely up to the resident. So, Pete, it has nothing to do with “making the decision for themselves,” and everything to do with helping people who might not have had the time or ability to coordinate a trip.
Fox is trying to create a giant controversy because they know that Americans do find it creepy to have the government come knocking at the door. Again, we understand why some Americans do have some reservations. Biden didn’t announce a formal program. The community to community approach is better, continuing to use churches, athletic events (high school football is about to start soon, that brings people out all over the south), public transit stations, these are likely the areas where the government would have the most success.
The “my body, my choice” is precious. With abortion, it truly is a woman’s body and choice. It doesn’t impact her neighbor. With vaccinations, one’s choice with one’s body absolutely can and will impact one’s neighbor, especially if neither is vaccinated. We assume that the Right now sees the light with women’s choice to control their bodies and change their position.
