Unfortunately, innocent people are charged with crimes in this country far too often. And, while it is true that almost everyone charged with a crime initially cries out that they’re innocent and falsely accused, this is especially true of people that actually are innocent and falsely accused.
David Frum, a never-Trumper, and former Bush speechwriter, noticed something odd in the Trump Organization’s statements regarding the charges filed yesterday. The Trump Organization (Surely written or approved by Trump) never actually denied that they committed the crimes. As per usual, Trump does nothing but attack people. Trump doesn’t believe that laws matter. Life and business are about personal relationships, everything is transactional. In Trump’s mind, the issue isn’t whether he broke the law, no the only issue is whether the people prosecuting him hate him.
We apologize, even the above explanation is confused, but it’s because it’s near impossible to explain Trump. Frum tries:
“An early indication that things may end badly for Trump is the statement released today from the Trump Organization.”
We agree, read the statement closely:
Allen Weisselberg is a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who has worked for the Trump Organization for 48 years. He is now being used by the Manhattan District Attorney as a pawn in a scorched earth attempt to harm the former President. The District Attorney is bringing a case involving employee benefits that neither the IRS nor any other District Attorney would ever think of bringing. This is not justice; this is politics.”
Whether the case is motivated by politics or not, the law is the law. We don’t doubt that there is perhaps some political angle to it, but if laws were broken, they were broken, period. The Trump Organization (Which is Trump) seems to believe that the only thing that matters is these awful people hate him.
As Frum writes:
“Trump and his team already appear to expect that the law will be against him. They are counting on that fact not to matter very much—not enough to overcome the political hullabaloo they hope to raise in Trump’s defense,
“Trump worked all his life on the theory that law can be subordinated to political favors and political pressures. That theory has carried him this far—and it’s pretty far, all things considered. We are now about to see a mighty test, before the country and the world, of whether that theory will carry him the rest of the way home.”
It will only take one juror to hold out to declare a mistrial. Just one. Trump is already talking to that juror. “Ignore the law. They just hate me. It’s not fair.”
