We have repeatedly reported on and analyzed the increasingly intense political polarization in this country, calling it the “Cold Civil War,” while also noting that it got pretty hot on January 6th. There is no rule that, just because this is the United States and not Iran, that it cannot get hotter, not if there’s a serious willingness on the Right.

The ridiculous “reinstatement” mantra coming from the MAGA mess is driving at least some of them to a fever pitch. It is best to recall that two out of every three Republicans believe that Trump won the election and it was stolen.

CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan went to Trump’s Ohio Rally this past Saturday to interview some of the attendees. Before we even get to what was said, it’s critical to remember that a rally isn’t even a cross-section of the everyday run-of-the-mill MAGA. No, only the hardest of the hardcore would give up a beautiful summer Saturday to attend a rally held by a loser. And yet it is scary, regardless.

Among the things O’Sullivan heard from various MAGAs:
–“He didn’t lose. He didn’t lose. I know he didn’t lose.
– “Biden sucks.”
–Trump won, all of them, all of them, and 2020, and the next one.
–January 6 insurrection was all staged. I truly believe that.

And the even more frightening ones:
-“He’s coming back soon, and you guys are going down. The military already knows it was a fraud. He won by over 80 percent.”
–“He’s coming back before the middle of August”

When asked what if Trump isn’t reinstated in August:
-“We’re going to be in a civil war because the militia will be taking over.”

It is so easy to write this stuff off as all bark, no bite. And perhaps there is some merit to that, not overreacting. But January 6th should be a lesson for all of us regarding the danger in becoming too complacent. No, not in a million years is “the militia” taking anything down. Of course, not. But extremists don’t fight that way and we’ve seen it over and over again from all over the globe. They fight asymmetrically, hitting soft targets anonymously, and that is a real threat.

The more Trump pumps these people up, the angrier they get, the more danger they represent, and the nation’s security becomes less predictable.

The people attending rallies are a small cross-section of MAGAs but as we’ve seen, it only takes a small number to inflict great harm.
