The man who loves to speak in third person will tell you that “Trump is Trump and if a disaster hits, people want Trump,” or something.
So it would appear. According to the Washington Examiner, Trump plans on going forward with a rally in Florida, despite the fact that the state is in mourning over the horrific building collapse earlier in the week and despite the fact that one of Trump’s biggest acolytes in Ron DeSantis has made a direct appeal to Trump to put the rally off, to not come.
According to the Washington Examiner:
DeSantis’s office has “made a direct plea” to the former president’s team, calling on it to postpone the Saturday event in Sarasota. One Florida Republican bluntly said Trump and his team need to “read the room.”
Excuse us, but Trump and his people have read the room like they read every room, Trump is the single most important human being on the planet and will go where he wants, when he wants, and doesn’t give a fck what you or anyone else thinks. Perhaps DeSantis is just now learning this fact. There are times one doesn’t want Trump around.
“The governor is getting tested here as to how far he’s going to be pushed before he breaks ranks with President Trump. And he has to be very careful because this is Trump country,” this source said. “The base loves the president. But they equally love Ron. It’s a showdown going on right now.”
This is patently absurd. If the base equally loves Ron, he should tell Trump to go to hell, that he’s taking care of the state, and it’s wrong for Trump to come down like a conquering hero and DeSantis might pull the permit. It would be DeSantis’s chance to assume the thrown. But DeSantis is not as popular as Trump and thus cannot do such a thing, which is why he will quietly obey behind the scenes.
This is all being blamed on Trump’s new communications director who apparently has about as much respect for DeSantis as we do:
“Nobody close to Trump wants to cancel…” This is all being led by Susie Wiles, who had a falling out with DeSantis after working on his successful 2018 gubernatorial campaign.
“Because Ron DeSantis doesn’t want it, she’s gonna make sure it happens,” one GOP operative tells the Examiner. “The governor supports the president, but something awful just happened in his state.”
How typical MAGA. Everything is transactional, there are no principles, one thing leads to revenge, or another allows someone to ride the coattails of another. Amazing, but for the first time ever, we find ourselves on the side of DeSantis. The citizens of Florida, many of whom are still grieving and scared (“Is my building next?”) should be allowed to come to terms without the circus coming to town. Even DeSantis seems to understand this.
