WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Trump used the final day before the 2026 midterms to showcase the overdue reopening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
- His presentation focused on construction photographs, project overruns, piping, algae, fountains, grass and assorted political grievances.
- Trump briefly called the election cycle “the most important midterm, I believe, in our lifetime” but sounded uncertain about Republican prospects.
- The costly project and peculiar setting turned Trump’s closing argument into an awkward display rather than a focused appeal to voters.
Donald Trump spent the closing days of the 2026 midterm campaign traveling across the country in an effort to rescue struggling Republican candidates, primarily in red states. His final pitch, however, offered voters a bewildering collection of personal fixations instead of a coherent political message.
During rallies and social media posts, Trump focused on Republican Sen. Jon Husted’s buttocks, cognitive tests, oil industry profits, Washington, D.C., golf courses, New Mexico’s name and his attempts to rename “artificial intelligence.” Policy priorities and a vision for the final two years of his term were conspicuously absent.
With control of Congress on the line and one day left in the election cycle, Trump still had an opportunity to address a national audience. Rather than make a focused case for Republican candidates, he scheduled remarks at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to celebrate its overdue reopening.
Asked over the weekend about that decision, Trump said it was important to “show how beautiful” the completed project looked. The choice put his attention on a project that cost vastly more than he had said it would and emerged from a contract awarded without bidding.
What Trump presented as a triumph had already become an election season failure. The project offered a particularly awkward backdrop for a president who needed a strong closing argument and instead chose to spotlight a costly vanity project.
Once Trump began speaking, the event became even stranger. According to MS NOW’s live coverage, he opened his closing message on the midterms by joking about renaming the historic site after himself, while initially making no mention of the elections.
The joke followed his previous attempts to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America and the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. But the president’s attention quickly shifted from renaming landmarks to an unintentionally amusing show and tell about the Reflecting Pool project.
Trump held up assorted photographs, defended the project’s cost and calendar overruns, and made claims about “vandalism” that the article described as appearing to exist only in his imagination. It was hardly the disciplined finale Republican candidates might have wanted.
The president proceeded through a lengthy list of construction details, discussing piping, algae, bubbles, caulking, limestone, fountains and nearby grass. He also described the Reflecting Pool as “a massive piece of pool.”
The detours kept coming. Trump complained about former FBI Director James Comey, celebrated trade tariffs, promoted his desire to construct a “triumphal” arch and emphasized his plans involving a local golf course.
He also said the United States had already “won” the ongoing war with Iran, which began eight months earlier. The article argued that Trump did not appear to have any idea how to end that conflict, even as he declared victory.
Only later did viewers who expected a message about the midterms receive a few fleeting remarks about the elections themselves. Trump called the cycle “the most important midterm, I believe, in our lifetime,” but his assessment of Republican prospects did not project much confidence.
“For some reason the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms,” he said, “but we gave this a very strong shot.” Those sounded less like the words of a party leader expecting encouraging results than an early explanation for possible disappointment.
The Reflecting Pool setting supplied the final layer of absurdity. In Greek mythology, Narcissus lost sight of what mattered because he could not turn his attention away from a pool, an image that came to mind as Trump delivered his peculiar Monday afternoon presentation.
