Elon Musk is pouring another fortune into Republican politics as Democrats threaten scrutiny of his sprawling business network. The racist billionaire has added $76 million to an already historic spending spree ahead of the midterms, according to Politico.
In total, Musk has spent more than $442 million supporting the GOP this cycle. That staggering sum makes him the single biggest political spender in all of U.S. history, turning one billionaire’s wallet into a political machine of its own.
Much of that money is flooding battleground states with advertising intended to motivate conservative voters. The spending is being driven through Musk’s America PAC, which is blanketing digital platforms with the right’s familiar collection of socialist panic and grievance politics.
One major target is James Talarico, the Democratic Senate candidate in Texas. Talarico captured the stakes of Musk’s enormous intervention in a blunt post on X.
“There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator,” Talarico wrote. His criticism goes directly to the spectacle of one extraordinarily wealthy person spending hundreds of millions to shape who serves in Congress.
Many of Musk’s advertisements promote the right wing fever dream that socialists are taking control of the country. Almost all of his digital advertisements feature the same group of prominent political figures whom conservatives routinely present as threats.
Those figures include Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. Musk’s advertisements use their images to energize conservative voters across contested states.
The spending follows Musk’s enormous effort to boost President Donald Trump during the 2024 election. After spending hundreds of millions on that campaign, Musk was rewarded with the Department of Government Efficiency, which the article says cost Americans millions and ruined lives around the world.
Since then, Musk’s companies and activities have faced little to no scrutiny from the Republican controlled government. The Trump administration shut down investigations involving Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla, while congressional Republicans showed little interest in examining his business empire.
That Congress is led by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. It has also been thoroughly disinterested in overseeing Grok, Musk’s chatbot, despite the article’s description of it as a pedophile chatbot.
Democrats serving across multiple congressional committees have publicly said that Musk’s network will face intense examination if their party wins a majority. That promise creates an obvious political danger for a billionaire whose companies have avoided investigations under Trump and the GOP Congress.
The article argues that Musk’s campaign spending reflects his desire to avoid accountability. A Democratic majority could bring the congressional scrutiny that Republicans have declined to pursue, putting his companies and broader network under a microscope.
Musk has also recently invested $1 billion for a stake in Skydance, the parent company of Warner Bros. and Paramount. The article notes that the company also now owns CBS News and CNN, expanding Musk’s reach around major information outlets.
That investment fits with Musk’s previous move to buy Twitter in 2022. His purchase of the platform gave him greater influence over which news and information surfaces, making his interest in controlling information flows anything but secret.
The article contends that Musk wants to avoid public scrutiny because greater awareness of his backing of fascism, child abuse, and racism damages his popularity and makes people less likely to support his businesses. His political spending therefore serves interests far beyond any single election.
With more than $442 million already directed toward the GOP this cycle, Musk is not merely supporting a handful of candidates. He is using an unmatched fortune to help preserve Republican control while Democrats promise the scrutiny that his political allies have conspicuously failed to provide.
