First lady Melania Trump appeared on Fox News Wednesday morning for a friendly turn with the crew of “Fox & Friends.” The hosts provided the expected fawning attention while Melania offered a remarkably restrained defense of her husband, President Donald Trump.

“He’s very focused—he has a lot on his plate,” Melania said. That might sound supportive at first, but it is hardly the soaring endorsement one might expect from a first lady invited onto a reliably welcoming television program.

Melania continued with an assessment that landed somewhere between dutiful praise and a carefully worded disclaimer. “It’s very different—what’s going on around the world now—but I think he’s doing the best that he can.”

Doing the best he can is not exactly a declaration that everything is going wonderfully. It is the sort of faint praise that leaves plenty of room for listeners to contemplate what his best has actually produced.

Part of Melania’s statement was true, since Trump does have plenty on his plate. The last time she was in the White House, her husband was presiding over a catastrophic response to a global pandemic while the economy was in trouble.

The circumstances described this time are different, though hardly reassuring. Trump has been damaging an economy that was recovering, waging a costly and unpopular war, and creating additional chaos in public health.

Against that record, Melania’s description of a focused president doing his best did not amount to much of a rebuttal. If this was supposed to calm concerns about Trump’s performance, the effort arrived with all the force of a shrug.

Her appearance was ostensibly meant to highlight her role in reuniting a couple dozen Ukrainian children with their families. Those children were among the thousands kidnapped from their homes and taken to Russia.

That subject could have provided the appearance with a clear humanitarian focus. Instead, Melania also used the friendly Fox News platform to promise that she was working hard on projects that viewers could expect to hear more about in the coming weeks, months, and possibly years.

“I’m very focused, I’m very detail-oriented, and I’m very selective in what I do,” Melania said. The description centered heavily on her own focus, attention to detail, and selectivity rather than providing many specifics about those coming projects.

She also emphasized that much of her activity supposedly happens away from public view. “You don’t see me everywhere, but behind the scenes I’m working nonstop … I’m working on so many projects in the future, so stay tuned—and all is positive, all is great.”

The projects themselves remained largely undefined in her remarks. What viewers received instead was a promise that many things were coming and an assurance that everything was positive and great.

That relentlessly sunny language sat awkwardly beside her guarded description of Trump. Her husband was not presented as succeeding brilliantly or delivering great results, merely as focused and doing the best that he could amid events around the world.

The contrast made her praise feel even thinner. Melania described herself as working nonstop, being highly selective, and managing numerous future projects, while Trump received the verbal equivalent of credit for effort.

Fox News offered a comfortable setting for the appearance, and Melania used it to promote her own image and tease future ventures. Yet even with fawning attention from “Fox & Friends,” her defense of Trump never rose above a halfhearted vote of confidence.

Perhaps “the best that he can” was intended to sound reassuring. Given the damaged recovering economy, costly and unpopular war, and continued public health chaos described in the record before her, it instead sounded like the problem in six words.
