It has been a powerful and sobering week. Not only have we had to see and feel the betrayal through new evidence coming forth, evidence pointing toward a potentially widespread plan for January 6th, just how many people might have known what was coming (i.e. Sean Hannity tweeting Meadows on January 5th, “I fear the next 48 hours”), but we’ve also rightfully thought about the victims, both the victims on the ground and in the Capitol that day, but all of us, all of us that care about our democratic heritage are victims.
January 6th, whether it will ever be admitted or not, was a violent attempted coup d’etat, an insurrection, an attempt to overthrow the proper incoming government. For what it’s worth – and it’s not meaningless – Karl Rove called it out as such and blamed Republicans, solely, for the day.
What is depressing is that the average MAGA will not see any of this. None of the top Republicans appeared at the proceedings, none. They were at a funeral in Georgia for a one-time Republican Senator, and that’s understandable, but a funeral could have been moved a day, moved even to an evening, January 6th is now sacred.
And the Sean Hannity that was so terrified a year ago (“Look guys, he can never speak about the election again…”) won’t have a word of this on his show tonight.
But Donald Trump did watch Biden’s speech. We know because Trump put out a statement immediately afterward (in fact, it got out just as Biden was finishing). Psaki was asked about Trump watching the speech and their thoughts.
She nailed Trump to the wall, deservedly so, and it was also a bit sad:
“Well, it looks like he saw the speech. I guess that’s good news. Maybe he learned something about what it looks like to meet the moment in the country.
Trump has never learned anything, with the possible exception of how to better avoid consequences and how to take earlier advantage of situations. He doesn’t care about meeting the moment in the country.
“To meet the moment where people are hurting, they are thinking of the pain, all of the people who worked in that Capitol who were there a year ago. Whether they were members of Congress, their staff, janitors or journalists. And to speak to who we can be and call for people’s higher powers to reach that. Maybe he learned something from that. I guess we’ll see.”
This morning, from a CNN interview, we learned from Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s spokesperson (On January 6th), that Trump watched the “fight” thinking it was cool, watching people unleash themselves for him, even rewinding and rewatching portions.
And Trump is going to learn something about the victims? He is going to think of them as pawns and suckers. Period.
Jen got it just right in tone. “Maybe he learned something,” sounds like a teacher explaining disciplining a student, which is probably giving Trump too much credit in this situation.
