Ivanka Trump is likely to find herself as the first family member to be subpoenaed by the House Select Committee. Last night, we heard that Don Jr. texted Mark Meadows directly in an attempt to get Trump to call his people off from the Capitol. Yes, so did half the Republican world. Laura Ingraham texted Meadows. Junior is not the story.
Ivanka, however, is in a very different position and she may regret it because the House Select Committee is almost surely going to send out their first subpoena to someone with “Trump” in their name and there is news out tonight that will near ensure it happens sooner rather than later.
Reports are now coming out that Lindsey Graham tried to reach Trump with the same message; “Call your people off!” But instead of texting Mark Meadows, Lindsey Graham texted Ivanka Trump. Here is a question; What is one of the most powerful MAGA senators doing texting Ivanka Trump to get a message to Dad? And what did those texts say?
Obviously, the committee will want to know, and they won’t just want to hear the message to dad. They will want to hear what Graham and Ivanka discussed.
The committee was always going to subpoena Ivanka. Ivanka, recall, is not just daughter-wife, but she was an official White House employee, and one of the very few in the room with Trump as the horde descended upon the Capitol.
Ivanka thus has three things ensuring that she will be subpoenaed, though the news has yet to be released: She is an administration employee. She was in the room with Trump as the riot occurred. Now, just tonight, we are learning that she received texts from Sen. Lindsey Graham, perhaps Trump’s most loyal advocate in the Senate.
There is one other thing the committee might want to ask Ivanka about. In July, the Washington Post reported from Phillip Rucker and Carol Leonnig’s book “I Alone Can Fix It” that, while in the room, and while hearing Trump berate and talk about Mike Pence, Ivanka turned to one of Pence’s aides and said; “This isn’t fair, Mike Pence is a good man.” The Committee might want to ask Ivanka about the “entirety” of what she was referencing when saying that things were not fair to Mike Pence, did her feelings extend beyond the phone call?
But for tonight, the breaking news is that Graham texted Ivanka to get Trump to call off the rioters. From the Independent:
Calls have been issued for Ivanka Trump’s texts from January 6, the day of the insurrection, to be released after South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham revealed she was a conduit to then-President Donald Trump.
Texts handed over to the House panel investigating the Capitol riot by former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows before he ceased his cooperation with the committee have revealed that Fox News hosts and Mr Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr texted Mr Meadows on January 6 urging him to get Mr Trump to call off his supporters and tell them to go home.
Mr Graham has said that he didn’t text with Mr Meadows on January 6, but told CNN’s Manu Raju that he spoke with Ivanka Trump and asked her to send a message to her father to “tell his people to leave”.
And one last important point, if Ivanka took those phone calls on her personal phone, she has yet another problem because those calls were most definitely official government business. It might not have felt like it at the time. It might have felt like a personal plea, but in an investigation, those calls are obviously some of the most important official calls that she could receive. If she took them on her personal phone, she has another problem.
