One thing every single person who has been admitted to the bar knows is that you do not file frivolous lawsuits. “Rule 11,” every attorney knows it. If you file something that you know is untrue, you’re going to get it. If you file something you know you cannot possibly win, and the court really couldn’t help you even if you had a bit of a legitimate whine, you’re gonna get it. “Rule 11,” a court can kick your ass around, make you pay the other side’s fees and add some sanctions on top, just so you understand that it’s a bad idea.
You can get reported to the bar, too.
Most of the time, people who file frivolous lawsuits don’t take up a bunch of time from the other side. In some types of cases, the loser pays anyway. But running up the score to $175K is actually pretty tough to do. Sidney Powell and L. Lin Wood managed to get there. These are also the people sued for millions by Smartmatic.
Bankruptcy.
It is weird because Sidney Powell was once a partner in a powerful Milwaukee firm. They don’t just give those positions away. She must have been good. But then she was touched by Trump. Everything Trump touches dies.
“This lawsuit represents a historic and profound abuse of the judicial process,” U.S. District Judge Linda V. Parker wrote back in August when she approved the costs and fees, and sanctions. The numbers were submitted, argued on a bit and today she arrived at the number.
From Rawstory:
In her decision Thursday, Parker lowered the city’s amount by roughly $29,000, to $153,285.62. Trump’s lawyers did not challenge the amount of $21,964.75 submitted by Whitmer and Benson, meaning they’ll have to pay a total of $175,250.37 in sanctions.
The judge did note that these attorneys can beg for money from people supporting Trump and may have money left over from funding their case. I doubt the judge cared anyway.
And good luck to both of them in begging the MAGAs for money to pay for a lawsuit they advertised as the Kraken and managed to get their ass kicked fairly severely, surely breaking the hearts of many a MAGA.
“Rule 11.”
