Empty seats are ugly, and highly symbolic.
Thus it is that the people that operate arenas and stadiums have those gorgeous big tarps that they place, tightly over the areas up high, and just move everyone into the lower bowl when an event undersells. Sometimes, it’s totally legitimate, when a college team plays in a pro arena and there was never an expectation of selling it out or anything. Some baseball stadiums are way too big for your average Wednesday night game. The tarps come in handy.
But when you are booking an event independently and don’t really have a “home” in which you’re expected to play, you generally pick a place you expect to fill the demand and make tickets just scarce enough to maximize your profit.
There is a reason that U2 uses the Rose Bowl, while the 20-year-old guys who’ve never released anything significant play a club.
Donald Trump and Bill O’Reilly hosted… something. Maybe a speaking duet? And even though both these people speak all day, every day, they apparently thought there was a demand to pay to hear them speak in person. They overestimated the demand. They needed the tarps, perhaps because everyone’s heard it all before.
You will be shocked as to the subject matter:
“deriding the current president, claiming the election was stolen, and portraying the country under Joe Biden as a crime-ridden, inflation-plagued mockery overrun by foreign criminals.”
And they weren’t very good (shock), according to Rawstory:
Trump had few comments that veered from what he has often said publicly,” the newspaper reports. “But he made the occasional unrehearsed comment. When the microphone failed and O’Reilly went silent, Trump said he thought something had happened to him.”
“I thought he went down, which frankly would have been very exciting,” Trump said.
This should give you an idea- I don’t have an estimate. Each person paid $138 or more – some people paid thousands for VIP access. pic.twitter.com/i43Zr2FB5h

It sounds to us like a perfect night. They made nowhere near the profit they expected to make. The vastly overestimated the demand, which perhaps means they’ve vastly overestimated their importance and popularity, and the tarps covered a vast amount of seats.
And today isn’t looking much better:
