You know that your country is polarized and you know one side is right when every late-night comedian, whether regular late-night or even later shows, all support one side – the sane side. But among all those who support the sane side, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert are at a completely different level.
Last night, it was Colbert’s turn.
Because MAGAs are MAGAs, they don’t care what happens to you, they care about themselves, and that’s the extent of it. Such an attitude makes it really difficult during an epidemic because you’re asked to do things to protect your neighbors’ health.
MAGAs are MAGAs because they don’t want to care about their neighbor, they want to be just like Trump and Trump doesn’t care.
Dr. Anthony Fauci went into public health because he cares about his neighbors, meaning he cares about the nation’s health and disease control. But caring about someone’s health might require a sacrifice and so Fauci has asked for some sacrifices. Fauci – like every scientist who has had to deal with an entirely new issue – has also made an occasional error and had to reverse himself, and has admitted it.
Trump never made any mistakes. Ask him!
Thus it is that the MAGAs have come to hate Dr. Fauci at the same level at which they hate President Biden, yes – it’s that bad. So Ron Johnson, perhaps the biggest MAGA in the Senate, said that Fauci has always been wrong.
He said that Fauci “overhyped COVID” (We are closing in on 800,00 dead in one calendar year. Remember when the high number was 240,000? Remember when Trump said that without him, it’d be 2 million? We’re closing in). And, more incredibly, Johnson said that Dr. Fauci had overhyped AIDS. Perhaps AIDS represents the American government’s most horrific failure to appreciate the disaster at hand and shameful handling of a disease ever.
And that is why Stephen Colbert was angry enough and funny enough, to challenge Johnson and say, “Oh he underhyped AIDS? Well, good – then you won’t need protection when you go “f***K yourself.”
